Patrick Peterson SEC Legend honor is an easy one for LSU to explain

Some honors take a long argument. This one didn’t.

The SEC said Thursday that Patrick Peterson is the 2026 Football Legend for LSU.

If you watched him play in 2010, you already know why.

That fall, the junior cornerback was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year. He was also the conference’s Special Teams Player of the Year.

Nobody in league history had won both in one season until he did it.

Think about that for a second. One guy held the top defensive award and the top special teams award at once. Most players would be happy with one of those jobs.

It’s worth remembering he only needed three seasons in Baton Rouge to build that kind of case.

Peterson’s numbers still hold up

National voters noticed too. He won the Bednarik and Thorpe awards as a junior. That’s two national trophies in a single year, which isn’t a bad way to spend a fall.

His three seasons with the Tigers produced 135 tackles.

He picked off seven throws. Two of his punt returns ended in the end zone. Then there’s the kickoff work. He piled up 932 return yards in 2010 and that set a school record.

So he could hurt you on defense and he could hurt you on returns. That doesn’t leave the other team many good choices.

For a cornerback, that’s a lot of different ways to show up in a box score.

A long NFL run followed

The pros agreed with the college voters. The Arizona Cardinals took him with the No. 5 pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

He went on to play 13 seasons. His stops were the Cardinals, Vikings and Steelers.

Along the way, he made eight Pro Bowls. Three times, he was an All-Pro.

That’s a pro career most first-round picks would sign up for on draft night.

Thirteen years is a long time at a position where the job is chasing fast people around a field.

Now comes the part where he gets to stand still and wave to a crowd.

What December in Atlanta looks like

The 2026 class has 16 former stars and it’ll be honored at the SEC Football Weekend of Champions on Dec. 4-5 in Atlanta.

First comes the SEC Legends Celebration presented by T-Mobile. It’s set for Friday, Dec. 4, at the College Football Hall of Fame.

A day later, they’ll get a salute at Mercedes-Benz Stadium ahead of the SEC Championship Game.

Peterson has good company. Heisman winners are in this group. So are national champs, All-Americans and all-conference picks, plus guys who made a name in the NFL.

Per the conference, these 16 are a big part of football’s story on their campuses. Some played for SEC title teams, some won Super Bowls and some are already in a hall of fame.

Alabama’s legend is former head coach Nick Saban. Arkansas is represented by running back Felix Jones. Texas has running back Ricky Williams and Oklahoma has Billy Sims.

Mississippi State’s Darius Slay and Vanderbilt’s Casey Hayward are on the list as well. That makes three cornerbacks in one class, so somebody finally remembered that defensive backs exist.

For LSU, though, this wasn’t a hard name to land on. When a player does something no one had done before him, you don’t need a committee meeting to explain it.
